What Is The Hill at CU Boulder?

The Hill at CU Boulder is where student life actually happens. A current student explains what it is, where it is, and why it matters.
If you spend any time around campus, you will hear people say they are headed to The Hill, and if you are new you have no idea what that means. So let me clear it up. The Hill at CU Boulder is the student neighborhood directly west of campus, officially called University Hill, and it is the beating heart of student life here. It is where we eat, hang out, see shows, and end up on a Friday night. If campus is where you go to class, The Hill is where you actually live your college life.
Where exactly is The Hill?
The Hill sits right across Broadway from the west edge of campus. The main strip runs along 13th Street roughly between College and Pennsylvania. From most of central campus you can walk there in five to ten minutes. From the dorms closest to it, like Sewall and Athens North, it is under a ten minute walk to food and shops.
That walkability is the whole point. You do not need a car to have a social life at CU. You walk up The Hill, and everything is there.
What is actually on The Hill?
A little of everything, all packed into a few blocks. There is food, and a lot of it. The Sink is on 13th and is the oldest restaurant in Boulder, famous for pizza and burgers and a ceiling covered in graffiti. Cosmo's Pizza is the late night by-the-slice spot every CU student knows. Illegal Pete's is the burrito place that feels like Chipotle and a bar had a kid. There is also a beloved music venue, coffee shops, a head-spinning amount of student housing, and the independent fraternity houses.
The Hill is also where a lot of the unofficial social scene lives. Game days spill onto it. Concerts pull crowds to it. It has the kind of slightly worn, lived-in energy that a brand new shopping center can never fake.
Why The Hill matters if you are deciding on CU
Here is what families miss when they only do the campus tour. You can love the academic buildings and still have no idea whether you will be happy here, because happiness in college is mostly about the other 20 hours of your day. The Hill is where those hours happen. Seeing it tells you more about daily life at CU than any lecture hall.
The Hill also tells you something about Boulder itself. It is compact, walkable, a little crunchy, very outdoorsy, and full of students who are into both their majors and their mountains. If that energy excites you, CU is probably a great fit. If it feels off, that is useful to learn now and not after you have committed.
The Hill versus Pearl Street
People mix these up. Pearl Street is the famous downtown pedestrian mall about a mile north, and it is great, but it is more of a city and tourist destination with street performers and nicer restaurants. The Hill is the student version, closer to campus, cheaper, and louder. As a student, I am on The Hill far more than Pearl. Both are worth seeing, but The Hill is the one that tells you what student life is really like.
You have to see it to get it
I can describe The Hill all day, but the energy of standing on 13th Street on a normal afternoon, watching students pour out of class and into Illegal Pete's, is something a webpage cannot give you.
