Getting in is the exciting part. Deciding is the hard part. Before you put down a deposit at CU Boulder, there are a few things worth doing to make sure it actually feels like home, especially if you are coming from out of state and cannot pop back easily. Here is the checklist current students wish they had.
1. Walk The Hill, not just campus
Campus is beautiful, but you will spend just as much time on The Hill, the student neighborhood right across from campus. Food, coffee, shops, and the social scene all live here. Seeing it tells you more about daily life than any brochure.
2. Eat where students actually eat
Skip the visitor spots. Grab a bowl at Illegal Pete's, a smoothie at Rush Bowls, or a burger at The Sink. Where you eat every day matters more than you think.
3. Do a real hike
The Flatirons start right at the edge of campus from Chautauqua Park. Doing even a short hike shows you the thing that makes CU different from almost every other school: the mountains are not a day trip, they are your backyard.
4. Sit somewhere and just watch
Post up on Farrand Field or Norlin Quad for twenty minutes. Watch how students actually spend their downtime. You will get a real read on the vibe faster than on any guided walk.
5. Look into housing early
Check out the dorms, but also understand where upperclassmen live around The Hill. Housing shapes your whole experience, so it is worth knowing the neighborhoods before you commit.
6. Explore Greek life honestly
Greek life is a real part of how a lot of students socialize here, especially the first couple years. Whether or not you rush, understanding how it fits into campus culture helps you picture your own version of CU.
7. Talk to a current student
Not a rehearsed pitch. A real student who will tell you what they love and what they would change. The honest answers are the ones that actually help you decide.
8. Picture your Tuesday, not your tour
Anyone can enjoy a sunny visit day. Ask yourself what a normal Tuesday looks like here: class, food, study spots, weekend plans. That is the life you are choosing.
9. Weigh the out of state question
If you are coming from far away, think through cost, distance, and how often you will realistically get home. Loving the place makes the rest easier, but go in with eyes open.
10. See it through a student's eyes before you decide
The single best thing you can do is experience CU the way you would actually live it, guided by someone who is living it right now.
